Ingredients
- Dry Yeast2 Pkgs.
- Very Warm Water1/2 Cup
- Brown Sugar1/2 Cup
- Salt1 Tablespoon
- Warm Water2 1/4 Cups
- Whole Wheat Flour3 1/2 Cups
- Bread Flour (Or White)3 1/2 to 4 Cups
- Butter (Melted)1/4 Cup
Instructions
Dissolve yeast in very warm water. Add a little of the brown sugar to aid the yeast. After it starts to bubble, add the rest of the brown sugar, salt, butter and 2 1/4 cups warm water. Stir in the whole wheat flour and beat until smooth. Add bread flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well with each addition. Continue to add flour until dough leaves the side of the bowl almost clean. Knead dough on lightly floured surface about 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl and turn greased side up. Cover and let rise about 1 hour in warm place. Punch down dough and divide in half. Roll each half into a 9" x 18" rectangle. Roll up from long end and seal edges, folding under ends. Place seam side down in greased loaf pan ( 9" x 5" ), butter tops, cover, and let rise until double - about 1 hour.
Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes. Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.
Note: If dough doesn't rise high enough before baking, start the loaves in a cold oven. The fast warming oven will force-rise the dough.
